Player career

Reading FC (1978–1984)

Lawrie Sanchez began his career in the 1977/78 season with the English fourth division club Reading FC . After promotion to the third division in 1979, he spent the following four seasons as a regular in the Football League Third Division , before Reading in 1982/83 relegated back to the fourth division. Also thanks to a strong Lawrie Sanchez (45 league games / 10 goals), the club achieved direct resurgence in 1984.

Wimbledon FC (1984-1994)

In December 1984 he moved to the second division club FC Wimbledon . In the 1985/86 season Lawrie Sanchez (42 league games / 9 goals) rose with his team as third in the first division. The climber reached a very good sixth place in the Football League First Division 1986/87 . In addition to another successful year in the First Division 1987/88 , Wimbledon moved into the final of the FA Cup 1987/88 . Opponents in front of 98,203 spectators at Wembley were clearly favored Liverpool FC . Thanks to a goal from Sanchez in the 37th minute, however, the outsider prevailed 1-0 and won the first title in the club's history. The club established itself in the midfield of the first division in the following four years and thus also took part in the first season of the newly introduced Premier League 1992/93 . Lawrie Sanchez scored four goals in twenty-seven league games and finished the season with his team in twelfth place. Shortly before the end of the Premier League in 1993/94 , after almost ten years in London, he moved to the first division newcomer Swindon Town and was relegated from the first division at the end of the season.

Northern Ireland National Team (1986-1989)

The son of an Ecuadorian father and a Northern Irish mother made his debut for the Northern Irish national team on November 12, 1986 in a 0-0 win against Turkey. In 1989 he played two more international matches against Spain and Malta.

Coaching career

After his first coaching position at the Irish club Sligo Rovers , Lawrie Sanchez worked from 1995 to 1999 in the coaching team at Wimbledon FC. On February 5, 1999 he took over the post of head coach at the English third division club Wycombe Wanderers . In addition to average results in the league, the entry into the semi-finals of the FA Cup 2000/01 was the greatest success of his tenure. On September 30, 2003, he was released after a false start.

On January 21, 2004 he was hired as the new Northern Irish national coach. The team, without a win for three years, performed better in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup as the fourth of six teams. The 1-0 home win against England on September 7, 2005 attracted particular attention. The team achieved a further increase in performance in qualifying for the EM 2008 . Northern Ireland led their group with four wins after six games before Lawrie Sanchez announced his resignation on May 11, 2007. As early as April 10, 2007, he had taken over as interim coach at Fulham and achieved relegation with the team in the Premier League 2006/07 . After a false start in the 2007/08 Premier League , Sanchez was released on December 21, 2007.

Since May 13, 2011 he has been coaching the English fourth division club FC Barnet .
