Bangkok United FC (Thai: สโมสร ฟุตบอล แบ ง ค็ อก ยูไนเต็ด) is a professional football club from the Thai capital, Bangkok . The club currently plays in the Thai League .

Club history

The club was founded in 1988 as FC Bangkok University for the students of Bangkok University . At the end of the 2002–03 season, the club rose and ended its first season in the Premier League in a surprising fourth place. After finishing seventh in the 2004/05 season, the university won its first championship title in 2006. The title qualified for participation in the AFC Champions League 2007 However, they could only get three points out of the six group games and were eliminated early. The Singapore Football Association invited the club to the Singapore Cup in 2007 . The team ended up third in the competition.

In the run-up to the 2009 season, the Thai association raised the criteria for participation in the league. As a result, the club was re-established as Bangkok United. The active partner and helper here was the city of Bangkok, which aims to have a representative club for the city in the league. The association's president is Apirak Kosayothin, former governor of the city of Bangkok. In April 2009 the club founded its own football school. The most talented players, 18 of them, were allowed to train with Everton . The first season as Bangkok United was far from satisfactory. In the end, the club narrowly escaped relegation. Compared to FC Sriracha they had the worse goal difference with the same number of points. Due to the direct comparison, which in Thailand counts more than the goal difference, the league could be held in the end.

In the run-up to the 2010 season, longtime coach Somchai Subpherm left the club. Worrakon Vijanarong was his successor. Somchai was released from his new club, FC TOT, after just a few days. He then returned to Bangkok United. Worrakon, however, remained the club's head coach. Somchai took on the role of technical director. After the 2010 season they were relegated to the second division. After two years in the second division, the Thai Division 1 , they rose again to the Thai Premier League . Since 2013 the club has played in the top division of Thailand, the Thai League .
