Amphoe Khlong Luang ( Thai : อำเภอ คลองหลวง }, pronunciation: ʔāmpʰɤ̄ː kʰlɔ̄ːŋ lǔaŋ ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in the province of Pathum Thani in the central region of Thailand . The province is located directly north of Bangkok and is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Region .

geography

Adjacent districts are (clockwise from north) Bang Pa In and Wang Noi of Ayutthaya Province , Nong Suea , Thanyaburi , Mueang Pathum Thani and Sam Khok of Pathum Thani Province.

history

Originally, this area was part of the Bang Wai District administered by Müang Thanyaburi. In the Ayutthaya period, this area was dominated by lowland forests. When the kingdom of Ayutthaya was destroyed by Burmese troops in 1767, some of the surviving units had withdrawn to this area.

After the population grew, the arable land was extended as far as Thung Luang (now in Thanyaburi District). King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) ordered the construction of the Rangsit Canal ( Khlong Rangsit ) to ensure the irrigation of agricultural land in the Thung Luang and Bang Wai area. After the canal was completed, the government changed the name of the district to Khlong Luang to commemorate King Chulalongkorn's deed.

  • The Outer Bangkok Ring Road (National Road 9, Thai: ทางหลวง พิเศษ หมายเลข 9 ), a freeway that serves as a bypass for Bangkok.

Wat Phra Dhammakaya , the largest temple in Thailand, is located in the Tambon Khlong Sam of the Amphoe Khlong Luang . It is the center of the internationally widespread sect of the same name, which has its World Dhammakaya Center here. The landmark of the wat is the huge golden chedi, which is studded with a million individual Buddha figures (300,000 outside and 700,000 inside). Because of its unusual appearance, it is also known as the UFO temple. The site of the religious community covers a total of more than 400 hectares.
