Pathum Thani Province is located in the northern center of the central region of Thailand .

geography

Pathum Thani is located in the central plain of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ) and is surrounded by fertile landscape. Canals ( khlongs ) can still be seen in the city and in the outskirts , which were formerly used to transport goods. The distance to the capital Bangkok is about 45 km.

history

Pathum Thani was originally a settlement of the Mon who immigrated from Mottama ( เมาะ ตะ มะ ), now Martaban , Myanmar , during the reign of King Prasat Thong and Narai . The settlement was initially called Sam Khok. During the time of King Taksin more Mon to Ban Sam Khok immigrated which today Amphoe Sam Khok forms.

On the occasion of a visit by King Phra Phutthaloetla (Rama II) in 1815, the residents of Sam Khok presented him with numerous lotus blossoms as a token of devotion. The king then renamed Sam Khok Prathum Thani . Finally, in 1918 , the city and the province got their current name after King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) presided over the inauguration ceremony for the new administrative building (“Sala Klang”) of the province.
