Building history

Wat Phailom was founded in the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom .

Attractions

  • The main attraction of the temple is not so much Buddha statues, but a huge colony of silver gape beaks that use a mangrove forest on the temple grounds as their wintering quarters. Around 30,000 to 40,000 animals from Siberia and North India come together here via Bangladesh to breed and raise their young birds. The rag-billed storks feed on apple snails from the surrounding rice fields. Heightened paths have been laid out so that bird lovers can get a better picture of life in the colony. The colony is populated between November / December and April / May when the birds head north again before the onset of the monsoons .
  • In addition to the gaping beaks, there are also pelicans , kingfishers and ibises . Several thousand fruit bats have also gathered .
  • Very beautiful wall paintings can be seen in the temple itself.
