Mon state

Mottama , formerly Martaban ( Burmese မုတ္တမ မြို့ , BGN / PCGN : muttamamyo, pronunciation : [ moʊʔtəma̰ mjo̰; ]; Mon language : မိုဟ် တၟံ , pronunciation : [ mùh mɔʔ ]) is a small town in southern Myanmar in the Thaton district of the Mon state .

Mottama is located on the north bank of the Saluen , opposite Mawlamyaing , the capital of the Mon state. Here is the Bay of Martaban, to which the Irrawaddy and Saluen rivers flow.

After the collapse of the Bagan Empire, Martaban was the capital of the state of Rammanadesa in the late 13th and 14th centuries, which eventually became the Pegu Empire . Martaban remained an important trading post in the Pegu Empire until the early 16th century. In 1541 Tabinshwehti of Taungoo conquered the city and largely destroyed it. Since then it has remained severely limited in its importance. During the First Anglo-Burmese War, Martaban was captured by the British in 1824, but had to be returned to Burma after the end of the war in 1826. During the Second Anglo-Burmese War , the city finally became part of the British colony of Unterbirma.

Today Mottama is just a small village.
