Thaton ( Burmese သထုံမြို့ , sa htum mrui, BGN / PCGN : thadônmyo) is a city in Mon state on the northern half of the Tenasserim peninsula in southern Burma .
history
Thaton used to be a center of the Mon kingdom , which stretched from the Ayeyarwady ( Irrawaddy ) delta to almost Cambodia . The city is still considered in modern times by some Burmese , Thai and Mon as a place of identification, for which a partially historical kingdom of Suvarnabhumi ("The Golden Land") is claimed. This is claimed today by many ethnic groups in Southeast Asia , but rejected by scholars. According to the edicts of King Asok ( 3rd century BC ), Suvarnabhumi is believed to be in southern India , but not in Southeast Asia.
In the kingdom of Dvaravati , Thaton was an important port on the Gulf of Martaban , trading with India and Ceylon . King Anawrahta of Pegu captured Thaton in 1057 .
location
Over the centuries, sediments have made Thaton about 16 km from the coast and a sleepy town on the Bago - Mottama (Martaban) railway line .
