Michael Thurk (born May 28, 1976 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a former German soccer player . He was used as a striker .

career

First stations and Mainz 05 (until 2006)

Thurk grew up in the Gallus district of Frankfurt . At the age of six he started playing football for the Frankfurt club Sportfreunde 04 . Via the stations SpVgg 05 Oberrad and the Hessian upper division club SV Jügesheim , he moved to the second division club 1.FSV Mainz 05 in 1999 , where, after a year of familiarization, he played ten games in the upper division team, 17 mostly short second division appearances (no goal) and one goal in DFB Cup game against Bundesliga club Hertha BSC became a regular. From 2000 to 2004 Thurk scored 42 goals in another 122 games for the 05er, including goal of the month November 2001 with a volley from a sharp angle in the second division game at 1. FC Saarbrücken . There were also two goals from eight cup games. Thurk was at this point in time after Sven Demandt (55) and Jürgen Klopp (52) third-best second division goalscorer in Mainz. Still, Thurk was often more valuable as a team player.

At the end of the 2003/04 season , Thurk became the tragic hero of the 05er. In the final phase of a weak second half of the season (no goal until matchday 30), the club announced that they would not extend Thurk's expiring contract. The striker signed a contract with rival Energie Cottbus before the end of the season . With three goals in the last three games, two of them in a 3-0 win in the decisive final game of the season against Eintracht Trier , Thurk shot Mainz into the Bundesliga and at the same time prevented the promotion of his new club. Mainz 05 was promoted to the Bundesliga and Thurk switched to Energie Cottbus, for which he then played in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Thurk made a strong debut in Cottbus with six goals in ten league and cup games before he suffered a complicated jaw injury after a clash with Trier player Claus Grzeskowiak and was out for months. Thurk moved back to Mainz during the winter break of 2004/05. He initially paid part of the transfer fee himself. Later, 1. FSV Mainz 05 also took over this share. With six hits in 13 Bundesliga games, including the winning goal in the "anniversary game" - a few days after the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Mainz 05 club - against FC Schalke 04 , Thurk played a key role in the Mainz team's retention.

Eintracht Frankfurt (2006 to 2007)

For the 2006/07 season he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt . This transfer did not go without a sound, as Thurk was still an integral part of the Mainz team in the preparation for the season. Still, during the preparation, the player began publicly attacking his old club through the media. Finally he received approval from Mainz 05. After long disputes, both clubs finally agreed on the change.

In his first UEFA Cup game for Eintracht Frankfurt against Brøndby IF , Thurk scored a hat trick and with it his first goals for the Hessen coached by Friedhelm Funkel , and three days later also the first Bundesliga goal. However, this was followed by only two more hits during the 2006/07 season. In the overall balance of the season, Thurk only achieved an average of 4.30 in 24 games in the rating of the kicker sports magazine, making it the worst of the entire Frankfurt team. In the first half of the 2007/08 Bundesliga season Thurk was used regularly, but was rarely in the starting line-up, in which Ioannis Amanatidis was usually the only tip.

FC Augsburg (2008 to 2012)

During the winter break of the 2007/08 season, Thurk moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for FC Augsburg , for whom he scored two goals in his first game against 1860 Munich . In December 2009 he extended his contract, which originally ran until the summer of 2010, for another two years. In the 2009/10 season , his third year with the Swabians, Thurk was the top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga with 23 goals and took third place in the table at the end of the season with the FCA coached by Jos Luhukay , but failed in the relegation games against the third from bottom Bundesliga, 1. FC Nuremberg . Also in the second division 2010/11 Thurk was one of the regular cast. With a 2-1 home win in the game against FSV Frankfurt on May 8, 2011, Thurk made promotion to the 1st Bundesliga perfect with FC Augsburg.

On August 1, 2011, Thurk was released from training and match operations by his club with immediate effect, as after a tactical system change there was no longer any vacancy for him. Other reports saw interpersonal problems. Finally, on January 2, 2012, both parties agreed to terminate the contract, which ran until June 30, 2012.

1. FC Heidenheim and end of career (2012 to 2014)

In the winter break of 2011/12, Thurk moved to the then third division club 1. FC Heidenheim, who was looking for a replacement for two injured strikers for the second half of the season, and was used 13 times, where he missed a few games because of a suspension after a red card . At the beginning of May 2014 he suffered a rupture of the syndesmosis ligament . With the team he became champions of the third division in the summer of 2014; his expiring contract was not extended. He eventually ended his career because of his injury.

Youth coach and comeback at FC Stätzling

After his active career, Thurk completed further training as a tax clerk and became involved as a youth coach at FC Stätzling, a district club in Friedberg (Bavaria) , near his home in the Aichach-Friedberg district . From February 2018 he was eligible to play for the national league team, but after three appearances (one goal) he was unable to prevent relegation to the seventh-class district league .

In 2018 Thurk acquired the A trainer license.

Return to Mainz 05 as assistant coach

For the 2019/20 season , Thurk returned to his former club 1. FSV Mainz 05 as the third assistant coach in the team of head coach Sandro Schwarz . His contract runs until 2021. Schwarz and Thurk were promoted to the Bundesliga in May 2004 with Mainz 05. On November 11, 2019 - one day after Mainz 05 and Schwarz split up - Thurk was released as assistant coach.
