particularities

The most successful players, each with three top scorer awards, are Emanuel Günther and Simon Terodde. Siegfried Reich and Angelo Vier are the only players who were top scorer with two different clubs, Terodde even managed to do so with three different clubs. Next to Vier and Terodde, only Artur Wichniarek could defend his title. After being top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga, seven players were also able to become the top scorer of a season in the Bundesliga. Marek Mintál and Rudi Völler each achieved this a year after winning the title in the 2nd Bundesliga, Mintál even with the same club. In addition, Horst Hrubesch, Michael Preetz, Roland Wohlfarth and Alex Meier were top scorer in the 1st Bundesliga, after they had already won the title in the 2nd Bundesliga. Conversely, Lothar Emmerich and Fritz Walter were top scorer first in the first and then in the 2nd Bundesliga. Marek Mintál was twice the top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga and was in between the top scorer in the first Bundesliga.

Lothar Emmerich, Marek Mintál and Souleyman Sané are the only top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga who were also top scorers of a season in a foreign first division. Emmerich was the top scorer in the Belgian First Division in 1970 . In the 1994/95 season Souleyman Sané was the top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga . In 2002 and 2003, Marek Mintál was the top scorer in the Slovak Mars Super League .

Of the total of 53 top scorer, 15 came from abroad. The Senegalese Souleyman Sané was the first foreign top scorer in 1988. The number of legionaries also shows globalization in professional football. While Sané was only a foreigner top scorer in the 14th year of the 2nd Bundesliga, eleven out of fourteen (or nine out of twelve different) top scorers in the ten years from 1999/2000 to 2008/09 were not from Germany.
