SC Freiburg made it back to the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt returned to the top class after two years. The multiple German champions 1. FC Nürnberg managed to march straight through as a newcomer.

All newcomers were able to keep the class - Nuremberg even rose. Three relegated teams came from Leipzig, Jena and Zwickau from the area of the former GDR . The fourth relegated team was SV Meppen, who was the last to remain without an away win and only managed to score four away points.
