Oslac

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oslac is the old English name variant of a common Germanic name, the old north. Asleikr , Latinized in a West Franconian source Ansleicus (presumably ahd. * Ansleich ) means. Etymologically, the first component of the name Os- , As- is related to the gods of the Asen , the second, however, to the Germanic word * laikaz , the Gothic laiks "dance", ancient north. leikr "game, string game, fighting game" and oldgl. lac means "game, dance, offering" (compare also Old High German leich "melody, tone"), which is why the name in the original Germanic meaning probably indicates a special relationship of the wearer to the cult of the Aesir.

Oslac is the name of the following people:

  • Oslac, attested in manuscript E of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the year 617 as the son of King Æthelfrith of Bernicia
  • King Oslac ( Oslac rex ), † around 767, historically not reliably identifiable, attested by a memorial entry for July 29th of Northumbrian-Anglo-Saxon provenance in the calendar of Hartbert von Lobbes
  • Oslac (also Osiai), King of Sussex in the 760s, attested 780 as Duke of Sussex ( dux Suthsaxorum )
  • Oslac (approx. 820), maternal grandfather of Alfred the Great, see Æthelwulf
  • Oslac of York , attested around 975, Duke ( dux et vir magnificus ) of Deira
