Jung Sung-ryong (born January 4, 1985 in Jeju-si , South Korea ) is a South Korean soccer player . He currently plays for Kawasaki Frontale .
Career
Jung Sung-ryong, nicknamed The Giant , began his professional career in 2003 with the Pohang Steelers , where he had to wait three years for his first-team debut. After he was used in 16 games the following season, he won the championship with the team. After moving to Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in 2008, Jung finally established himself as number one. In the 34 games of his first season at the new club, he only allowed 29 goals. In the 2009 season there were 41 goals against in 36 games.
Jung was the goalkeeper of the U-23 team in his country at the 2008 Olympic Games. Jung wrote a piece of football history when he became the first South Korean goalkeeper to score an international goal. It was in a friendly match between the U-23s against Ivory Coast on July 27, 2008 in Suwon when he took a free kick from 85 meters into the opposing net. He played his first full international match against Chile in January 2008 when South Korea's goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae had to serve a suspension. In that game, which was also the first under the new coach Huh Jung-moo , the goalkeeper was one of seven debutants. As a result, Jung Sung-ryong stood in seven qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa between the posts and conceded only three goals. When the suspension of goalkeeper Lee ended, however, Jung had to sit down on the bench again. In the summer of 2010, he was in his country's World Cup squad and played all four games for South Korea, which advanced to the round of 16.
Also in 2012 he was in the squad for the Olympic Games . In the first four games he was used, but injured himself in the quarter-finals against Great Britain, so that he had to be substituted and could not participate in the semifinals. In the game for third place he was back in goal and was able to win the first medal for South Korean football players with his team with the bronze medal.
