Hispasat 36W-1 (until March 2016: Hispasat AG1) is a communications satellite operated by the Spanish operator Hispasat . It is expected to provide communications services to the Canary Islands and South America from geostationary orbit 36º West.
The satellite was launched on January 28, 2017 with a Soyuz rocket from the Kourou spaceport . This was the first Soyuz launch from French Guiana in a geotransfer runway .
The satellite was built by the German space company OHB . It is the first satellite based on the new SmallGEO satellite bus , which will also be used for other missions. After around 25 years, a telecommunications satellite developed and built in Germany has now launched into space again.
Hispasat 36W-1 has 20 transponders in the Ku-band and 3 in the Ka-band . The satellite's payload was supplied by Tesat-Spacecom .
