Ryūji Kawai ( Japanese 河 合 竜 二 Kawai Ryūji ; born July 14, 1978 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a former Japanese football player .

Career

Kawai learned to play soccer on the school team at Seibudai High School . He signed his first contract in 1997 with the Urawa Reds . The club played in the highest league in the country, the J1 League . At the end of the 1999 season, the club was relegated to the J2 League . In 2000 he was runner-up in the J2 League with the club and was promoted to the J1 League. For the club he completed 13 games. In 2003 he moved to league rivals Yokohama F. Marinos . With the club he became Japanese champions in 2003 and 2004 . For the club he completed 145 first division games. In 2011 he moved to the second division Consadole Sapporo (today: Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo). At the end of the 2011 season, the club rose to the J1 League. At the end of the 2012 season, the club was relegated to the J2 League. In 2016 he became champion of the J2 League with the club and rose again to the J1 League. For the club he completed 179 games. At the end of 2018 he ended his career as a football player.
