Blue Period ( Japanese ブ ル ー ピ リ オ ド ) is a manga series by Tsubasa Yamaguchi . It has been published in the Seinen magazine Afternoon since 2017 and belongs to the drama genre. The manga has won several awards and has been translated into several languages. The story tells of a young person who discovers his enthusiasm for the visual arts and wants to attend an art college.

The high school student Yatora Yaguchi is a good student and spends his evenings with his buddies in Shibuya and watching football. But he doesn't know what to do with his life after school. Out of interest he got involved in a task for art class and was unexpectedly praised, also by his friends. Further contacts with the art club make Yatora more interested and eventually join the club. For the first time he develops an enthusiasm for something, sees how good the others are in the club and wants to get better. He talks to the others about which art school one could go to and learns how difficult the exams are and how strong the competition is. Since his parents cannot afford tuition fees, Yatora can only apply for the state Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku . Mori, the head of the club and a year over Yatora, over the holidays he diligently takes care of all the tasks given to him by the head of the club. Together with Yuka from his class, he then visits a preparatory school for the art college exams in winter, where for the first time he meets many talented young people who have the same goal as him.

The manga has been published in individual chapters in Afternoon magazine by Kōdansha since June 2017 . He brought out the series in seven volumes so far. The series has been published in German by Manga Cult in a translation by Lasse Christian Christiansen since June 2020 . Kōdansha himself publishes the manga in English and Milky Way Ediciones publishes the series in Spanish.

Awards

The series has won several awards. After Blue Period was nominated for the Manga Taisho Award in 2019 , the series won the award in 2020. The manga was also nominated for the Kōdansha Manga Prize in 2019 and won it in the category for the general public in 2020. Also in 2020 Blue Period was nominated for the Osamu Tezuka Culture Prize.
