The J.League Division 1 2006 was the fourteenth season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the eighth under the name Division 1 . Eighteen clubs took part in it. The season began on March 4 and ended on December 2, 2005; between May 7th and July 12th, no games were played due to the 2006 World Cup .
The championship was won by Urawa Red Diamonds , the team from Saitama it was the first J.League title and the fifth Japanese championship overall (the remaining four were won as Mitsubishi Motors SC in the Japan Soccer League ). Direct relegated to Division 2 2007 were Cerezo Osaka and previous year climbers Kyōto Purple Sanga . Avispa Fukuoka played in the relegation against the third of the J.League Division 2 2006 and failed due to the away goals rule to opponent Vissel Kobe .
mode
As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice in a double round tournament , once at home and once away. There were three points for a win; in the case of a draw, each team received one point. The final table was therefore created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The club with the best result at the end of the season won the Japanese championship and qualified for the 2007 AFC Champions League . The two worst teams relegated directly to the J.League Division 2 2007 , the third from bottom had to play against the third-best team in Division 2 in two relegation games for a place in Division 1 for the coming season. In the event of a tie after the end of these two games, the away goals rule was applied; should this not result in a decision either, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot- out was carried out.
Attendees
A total of eighteen teams took part in the season. For the first time in the history of the J.League, three teams left the division in the direction of Division 2. Here, the bottom of the table Vissel Kobe ended a nine-year membership in Division 1. Vissel was accompanied by J.League founding member Tokyo Verdy 1969 , whose creeping decline in the league since the end of the 1990s with reaching the penultimate place in the table found a temporary high point.
Kashiwa Reysol again only reached sixteenth place in the table and thus had to compete in the relegation again. There opponent Ventforet Kofu proved too strong, so that Kashiwa was relegated from Division 1 after eleven years. Ventforet, on the other hand, made it into the top football league in Japan for the first time in the club's history.
Also new to the league were the 2005 Division 2 champions , Kyōto Purple Sanga and runner-up Avispa Fukuoka . For Kyoto it was already the third promotion to Division 1 after 1996 and 2002, the last time they played at this level in the 2003 season. Avispa, on the other hand, returned to the top Japanese league after a total of four years after the team failed in the relegation against Kashiwa last year.
