The J.League Division 1 2000 was the eighth season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the second under the name Division 1 . Sixteen clubs took part in it. The regular season was played in two half-series and began on March 11, 2000. After the end of the second half-series on November 26, 2000, the winners of the two half-series, Kashima Antlers and Yokohama F. Marinos , played in two games for the Japanese championship. These finals were played after the regular season on December 2nd and 9th. After a 0-0 win in Yokohama, Kashima won the second leg at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium , to which the game had been postponed due to the expected audience interest, 3-0 and thus secured the third league title.
Relegated to the J.League Division 2 in 2001 were Kyōto Purple Sanga and Kawasaki Frontale .
mode
As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice, once at home and once away, but both half-series were counted as separate championships. If there was a tie after 90 minutes, the playing time was extended by two fifteen minutes, whereby the golden goal rule was applied. If it was still a draw after that, the game was counted as such.
There were three points for a win after regular time and two points for a win in extra time; in the event of a tie there was a counter for each team. The table for each semi-series was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most points for the finals of the Japanese championship. The winner of the finals qualified as Japanese champion for the Asian Club Championship 2000/01 . To determine the two relegated teams, a table was formed over the entire season after the end of the season according to the same criteria as stated above, the two worst teams had to go into the second division.
Attendees
A total of sixteen teams took part in the season. No longer there were the bottom of the table of the previous season, Bellmare Hiratsuka and the Urawa Red Diamonds , who had to relegate in an exciting relegation final between a total of three teams only because of the smallest goal difference as penultimate in the J.League Division 2 2000 .
The two relegated teams were replaced by Kawasaki Frontale , the 1999 Division 2 champion , and the runner-up FC Tokyo . Both clubs knocked on the door of the House of Lords last year, but failed for the time being in a qualifying game (Kawasaki) or due to a lack of economic conditions (FC Tokyo). With the rise of Kawasaki, Division 1 received the second city derby in its history just one year after the two clubs from Yokohama merged.
