Career

Club career

Toninho Cerezo began his football career with Atlético Mineiro in his hometown of Belo Horizonte. At the age of 16 he received his first professional contract in 1972 and debuted in the Series A . But it was not used very often in the months that followed. So he let himself be loaned to Nacional FC, where the man with the mustache matured into a regular player. In 1974 he returned to Atletico Mineiro. Here, too, he has become an important part of the team over time. Seven times (1976 and from 1978 to 1983) he won the state championship of Minas Gerais , once the state championship of Amazonas . In 1977 and 1980 he was voted the best player of the season, and in 1976 he was the second best player.

After these successful times, Toninho Cerezo ventured abroad, namely to Italy . There he was acquired by AS Roma . With Rome he won the cup twice in 1984 and 1986 . In Serie A he completed 70 games for the Giallorossi from 1983 to 1986 , scoring 13 goals. The highlight for Rome was the final on May 30, 1984 in the European Cup against Liverpool. With national team-mate Falcao the final ended 1-1 after extra time and on penalties Liverpool prevailed with 4-2 goals. He then joined Sampdoria Genoa from 1986 to 1992. In the 1990/91 season he won the "Scudetto", the championship, with the Sampdoria under coach Vujadin Boskov and the attacking duo Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini . Before that, he achieved success in the cup in 1988 and 1989. With Genoa he was a finalist for the European Cup Winners' Cup on May 10, 1989 . When a year later, on May 9, 1990 in Gothenburg, the EC triumph against RSC Anderlecht, Cerezo was not in the final due to injury. He had his last major appearance with Sampdoria on May 20, 1992 at London's Wembley Stadium when he played the final of the European Cup against FC Barcelona.

Toninho Cerezo played in the position of defensive midfielder.

National team

The midfielder of Atletico Mineiro made his debut in the Brazilian national football team in the international match on March 10, 1977 in Rio de Janeiro against Colombia (6-0). Among the highlights of his career in the Selecao were the two appearances in the World Cup tournaments in 1978 in Argentina and 1982 in Spain. In Argentina he played in the three group matches against Sweden (1: 1), Spain (0: 0) and Austria (1: 0). In the second final round, the games against Peru (3-0) and Poland (3-1) were added. The tournament ended with the game for 3rd place on June 24th in Buenos Aires against Italy with a 2-1 win. Valuable players in the tournament were Dirceu , Zico and Roberto Dinamite .

In 1980/81 he took part in the "Mini World Cup" and was scheduled for every game. Brazil prevailed against world champions Argentina and European champions Germany, but lost to Uruguay in the final.

With coach Telê Santana , Cerezo took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain. In the first game against the Soviet Union he was still on the bench, in the group games against Scotland (4-1) and against New Zealand (4-0) he was part of the starting line-up. In the final round on July 2 in Barcelona he was part of the midfield with Sócrates , Falcão and Zico , who beat defending champions Argentina with a 3-1 win. Three days later, the disappointment was all the greater when center forward Paolo Rossi threw Brazil out of the tournament in a great moment with three goals for Italy by losing 3-2.
