The performance of Austria in group 3 had to be described as a sensation. The much higher rated Spaniards (2: 1) and Sweden (1: 0) were defeated, so that even the 0: 1 defeat against Brazil could not prevent group victory. Brazil had a surprisingly difficult time against Sweden (1: 1) and Spain (0: 0), because z. B. Superstar Zico couldn't convince. However, Brazil had scored a goal from a corner against Sweden in the last second. However, the referee had blown the whistle when the ball was in the air and did not give the hit. Spain, on the other hand, did not benefit from the 1-0 victory in the last game against the Swedes and had to travel home together with the Scandinavians.

In contrast to the first final round, Peru in Group B was, incomprehensibly, only cannon fodder for many observers. 0: 3 against Brazil, 0: 1 against Poland and even 0: 6 against Argentina was the sobering final for the kicker from the Andes. Poland could not match the performance of four years ago and lost in the decisive games against Argentina (0: 2) and Brazil (1: 3). The two favorites of the group parted goalless and the goal difference had to decide. The weak performance of the Peruvians, whose goalkeeper came from Argentina, hit Argentina completely through and Peru lost 6-0. It wasn't just the Brazilians who talked about a 'bought' game. Years later, a Peruvian senator mentioned that they had lost on purpose on purpose, but it didn't help them. Argentina were in the final and Brazil had to make do with the game for third place.

The disappointed Brazilians defeated Italy 2-1 in the game for third place, because Nelinho (64th) and the outstanding playmaker Dirceu (71st) scored when Causio (38th) conceded a goal.
