João Batista da Silva , better known as Batista (born March 8, 1955 in Porto Alegre ) is a former Brazilian soccer player who was used in defensive midfield.

International career

Batista won 38 games with the Brazilian national team between April 1978 and June 1983. He participated in the World Championships in 1978 in Argentina and in 1982 in Spain.

At the 1978 World Cup, Batista took part in every game of the Seleção , with the team not losing a game and conceding only three goals. The entry into the final was prevented by a controversial 6-0 Argentina against Peru. In 1982 he was part of the team that is considered the best Seleção of all time alongside the Brazilian world championship of 1970 . Batista was only a substitute, however. In the game against Argentina he was used for Zico and gained notoriety because the frustrated young Argentinian star Diego Maradona kicked him in the stomach and was sent off.

For the 1986 World Cup, he was no longer considered by national coach Telê Santana .
