Football World Cup 2014 / Brazil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Brazilian national football team at the 2014 World Cup . Brazil hosted for the second time and made it to the finals for the 20th time. Brazil was also the only country represented at all previous finals. After losing to Germany in the semi-finals and the Netherlands in the game for third place, fourth place was taken.

qualification

On October 30, 2007, Brazil was chosen to host the 2014 World Cup and was thus automatically qualified.

preparation

Since Brazil did not have to contest a qualification, all games for the 2014 World Cup were played after the 2010 World Cup. For example, a team supervised by the then national coach Mano Menezes took part in the 2012 Olympic Games , in which players who had prospects for the senior national team were grouped together. In addition, in 2011, in consultation with Argentina, which also failed in the quarter-finals in 2006 and 2010, the Copa Roca was renamed as Superclássico das Américas . However, since the games take place on days that are not reserved by FIFA for international matches and therefore no players active in Europe can be used, only the players who were active in the leagues of Argentina and Brazil were used in these games. In 2011 and 2012, Brazil won the competition. Mano Menezes was fired shortly afterwards and Luiz Felipe Scolari was his successor, assisted by Carlos Alberto Parreira as technical director. With both of them the last world championship titles were won in 2002 and 1994 respectively and they managed to lead the Brazilian team to victory at the Confederations Cup 2013 , with world champions Spain being defeated 3-0 in the final.

Squad

The Brazilian national team's provisional squad was announced on May 7th. Five players were also in the squad that was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, as well as Fred , who, like Júlio César, was already there in 2006. Five players were part of the squad that won the silver medal at the last Olympic Games.

Even before the draw for the final round on December 6, 2013, Brazil was identified as the group head of Group A and one of the two teams that played the opening game. At the drawing, Cameroon, Croatia and Mexico were drawn. Brazil also played against Cameroon in the 1994 World Cup preliminary round and in the preliminary rounds of the Confederations Cup in 2001 and 2003. The pre-World Cup record against Cameroon is positive with three wins and one defeat. Brazil also played against Mexico in the preliminary rounds of the World Cup in 1950, 1954 and 1962. Most recently they won 2-0 at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013. Before that, however, a Brazilian team with numerous current senior international players lost to another numerous current senior national players occupied the Mexican team in the final of the Olympic Games 2012. Brazil is the third most popular opponent of the Mexicans after the USA and Costa Rica. The pre-World Cup balance is positive with 22 wins, 6 draws and 10 defeats. Brazil last played against Croatia in the 2006 World Cup preliminary round and won 1-0. The other two games ended in a draw. The last group game was the 100th World Cup game for Brazil. Only Germany had already played more World Cup games at the time.

The team's quarters and training facility were the Almirante Heleno Nunes training center of the Brazilian Association in Teresópolis .

Knockout round

For the third time, Brazil met Chile in the round of 16. This is the most common pairing of the last sixteen in World Cup history. The record against Chile before the game was positive with 48 wins, 13 draws and 7 defeats. The previous World Cup games against Chile were all won, most recently in 2010 3-0 in the round of 16.

In the quarter-finals, Brazil had to do without Luiz Gustavo , who was suspended after two yellow cards. The senior national team had previously played against Colombia 24 times, 14 of which were won, 8 - the last 4 of which - ended in a draw and two were lost. They have never met at world championships.

In the semi-finals, Brazil had to do without captain Thiago Silva , who was suspended after two yellow cards. The striker Neymar was out for the remainder of the World Cup due to a lumbar vertebra fracture, which he sustained in a foul in the quarter-finals. Previously there were 21 games against Germany, 12 of which were won, 5 ended in a draw and 4 were lost. At world championships there was only one encounter in the 2002 final, which Brazil won 2-0. Germany won the last match before the World Cup between the two on August 10, 2011 3-2. In Brazil, Germany had never before won against Brazil. The 7-1 defeat is one of the two biggest defeats in Brazil and the biggest loss for a World Cup host.

Both met 11 times before and each team won three times. Five games ended in a draw. The goal difference was also equal before at 15:15. There have been four games at World Cups, Brazil won one normally, one on penalties and two lost.

Sports impact

On July 14th, the Brazilian Football Association CBF ended its collaboration with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari , technical director Carlos Alberto Parreira and the rest of the coaching staff. Successor as national coach was Dunga , with whom Brazil failed in the quarterfinals in 2010.

In the FIFA world rankings , Brazil fell four places from third to seventh place and were initially no longer the best South American team in the rankings as Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay overtook them. It was not until April 2017 that Brazil was able to oust the Argentinians, who had meanwhile moved up to number 1, from the top of the ranking and become the best-placed South American team again.

Resignations

Goalkeeper Júlio César and striker Fred ended their national team careers after the World Cup. Fred feared becoming "the new Barbosa of Brazil".
