When the final round was drawn on December 6, 2013, Russia was drawn into Group H with Belgium (group head), Algeria and South Korea. The only game against South Korea was played a few days before the draw and won 2-1 in Dubai . Before the World Cup, Russia could never win against Belgium. In the 2002 World Cup preliminary round they lost 3-2, which meant that the round of 16 was missed. The Soviet Union lost in the 1986 World Cup in the second round with 3: 4 after extra time against Belgium, but was in 1982 in the second final round with 1: 0 win against Belgium and also in 1970 there was a victory (4: 1) in the World Cup qualifying round. Before the World Cup, Russia had never played against Algeria, the Soviet team once, although the two separated 2-2 in 1964. Previously, Russia had not played in any of the three preliminary round venues.
The crew quarters were the San Raphael Country Hotel in Itu .
Russia was eliminated in the preliminary round. In the first game Russia did not get beyond a draw against South Korea. Goalkeeper Akinfejew had made a mistake that led to the goal. In the second game against Belgium they lost after a weak game. The German referee Felix Brych had not given a penalty despite a clear foul against Kanunnikow and Belgium had only scored in the 88th minute. In the final and decisive game, Russia had to beat Algeria and took the lead early on. Akinfejew made another mistake, which led to the decisive equalizer for Algeria. Shortly before, Akinfejew had been irritated by a laser pointer that a viewer had aimed at his eyes. The referee did not respond to Akinfeev's complaints. Because of the draw, Algeria reached second place in the group and thus the second round.
