Russia had little trouble qualifying directly for the finals as group winners. The only defeat was against Slovenia.

Preliminary round

Russia had three points after the second game. The last game against the up to then disappointing Belgians had to decide. A tie would be enough. In a dramatic game it was 1: 1 until shortly before the end. Then the Belgians scored two goals in four minutes and looked like the sure winners. But the Russians fought and scored the next goal in the 88th minute. The Belgians had to survive a few anxious minutes, but the score stayed that way. Russia was eliminated as third in group H of the preliminary round.
