qualification
In the South American Confederation, the qualification was played in a single large group that included all ten countries. The first four qualified directly, the fifth had to play two playoffs against the winner of the Oceania group.
Somewhat surprisingly, Ecuador finished second in the South American group, ahead of Brazil, and qualified for the finals of a soccer World Cup for the first time .

Preliminary round
Ecuador were blatant underdogs in Group G and so the first two games against Italy and Mexico were almost as expected lost, even though Ecuador briefly led 1-0 against Mexico. In the last encounter, the very weak Croatians who had previously beaten Italy were surprisingly defeated. Nevertheless, Ecuador was eliminated from the tournament as bottom of the table.
