Summary

Ecuador qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany as third in the South American qualifiers behind Argentina and Brazil.

Ecuador unexpectedly won the first round match against Poland 2-0 (1-0). The victory was completely deserved, especially since Ecuador was very well placed defensively and was able to fend off the Polish attacks except for two crossbar shots in the last minutes. In the offensive area a respectable short passing game succeeded, which led to two goals.

Ecuador was also able to win the second preliminary round match against Costa Rica 3-0 (1-0). Ecuador controlled the game and left only a few opportunities for Costa Rica except for a crossbar. After that, they qualified early for the round of 16 and even took the lead in front of hosts Germany . Reaching the knockout round for the first time was seen as a surprise internationally.

The third preliminary round match, in which it was all about winning the group, Ecuador deservedly lost against hosts Germany with 0: 3 (0: 2). Ecuador competed with half a B-team and it quickly became clear that they wanted to save all their energy for the upcoming round of 16 and did not do more than necessary for the game. Ecuador finished second in Group A, qualifying for the round of 16 (3 games, 2 wins and 1 loss, 5: 3 goals (+2), 6 points) with three points ahead of third place. So Poland and Costa Rica could be relegated to their places.

In the second round, Ecuador lost to the team from England 0: 1 (0: 0) and were eliminated. The team was also on the defensive and kept England in check throughout the game, in the early stages you could even have taken the lead yourself. After an hour, David Beckham decided the game with a free kick. In the remainder of the season, the Tri’s resources were too limited to turn the tide again.
