Giovanny Patricio Espinoza Pavón (sometimes spelled Geovanny , Geovani or Giovanni and Pabón ; born April 12, 1977 in Chalguayacu ) is a former Ecuadorian football player . His nickname is La Sombra Espinoza ( The Shadow Espinoza ), as he can hardly be shaken off by opposing strikers.

Career

society

Espinoza began his career in 1994 with SD Aucas in Quito, for which he made his first division debut in 1999. In the summer of 2001 he moved to CF Monterrey in Mexico, but returned to Aucas in 2002. Between February 2003 and December 2006 he played for LDU Quito in Ecuador. With his team he won the Ecuadorian championship in 2003 and 2005 ( Apertura ) and reached the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores in 2006 . On December 20, 2006, he was suspended for two months from championship and international matches after he had actively participated in a fight between players from Liga de Quito and Barcelona SC Guayaquil following the last game of the season a few days earlier. He moved to Vitesse Arnheim in the Netherlands at the end of January 2007 , where he was deployed for the first time in mid-February. In January 2008, he moved to Cruzeiro EC, as Vitesse had to downsize his squad due to financial difficulties. A year later he was signed by Barcelona SC in his home country. In July 2009 he moved like his compatriot Cristian Benítez to Birmingham City in the English Premier League.

National team

Espinoza made his debut for the national team on June 25, 2000 in a friendly against Panama , which was won 5-0. By March 28, 2009, he completed 87 international matches, in which he scored two goals. He was nominated by coach Luis Fernando Suárez for the 2006 World Cup and played all four games of his team. Espinoza already took part in the 2002 World Cup , but was not used at the time by coach Hernán Darío Gómez . He also took part in the tournaments for the Copa America in 2001 , 2004 and 2007 .
