Ulises Hernán de la Cruz Bernardo (born February 8, 1974 in Piquiucho ) is a former Ecuadorian football player .
Career
Ulises de la Cruz was born in Piquiucho, a small village in the Chota Valley , which politically belongs to the Bolívar Canton of the Carchi Province . He first attended a soccer school in the poor area of his homeland, which is inhabited by Afro-Ecuadorians. He played for Ecuador's national youth teams and made his debut in the Ecuadorian championship for Deportivo Quito in 1991 . In 1995 he moved to Barcelona SC Guayaquil in Guayaquil, the most important club in his home country. Here he was not able to assert himself permanently and was loaned back to SD Aucas in Quito in 1996 . His good performance there ensured his move to the other top club in Ecuador, LDU Quito , with which he won the Ecuadorian championship in 1998 and 1999. In 2000 he was briefly loaned to Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte in Brazil. In 2001 he moved to Europe to Hibernian Edinburgh in Scotland . After a year he moved to Aston Villa in the English Premier League . For the 2006/07 season he was retired there and moved to the then promoted Reading FC . There his contract was extended by a year in May 2007, although de la Cruz was not a regular player. After the 2007/08 season, when Reading was relegated from the Premier League and de la Cruz played six league games, the contract ran out. A move to Watford FC failed and de la Cruz was initially without a club. In March 2009 he signed a one-month contract with Birmingham City . In this short period he played a league game as a substitute. He refused to extend his contract until the end of the season. Instead, he signed a two-year contract with Liga de Quito in his home country in late April 2009 from the second half of the 2009 season, which began in July.
De la Cruz has played 98 times for the Ecuadorian national team and scored five goals (as of June 2008). He took part in the 2002 World Cup and was used in all three group games. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany he reached the round of 16 with his team and was used in all four parties in Ecuador. He was also at the tournaments for the Copa America 1997 , 1999 , 2001 , 2004 and 2007 in the squad of Ecuador.
He maintains a foundation that finances projects especially for children in their home communities. Among other things, she maintains a medical post with doctors and dentists in de la Cruz's home village.
