Edwin Alberto Villafuerte Posligua (born March 12, 1979 in Guayaquil ) is an Ecuadorian football player ( goalkeeper ).

Career

Club soccer

Villafuerte played for Barcelona SC Guayaquil in his native Ecuador since the 1997 season . In 1998 he made his first division debut, but remained in the squad goalkeeper number 2 behind national goalkeeper José Francisco Cevallos . After an injury to Cevallos, he was promoted to the goalkeeper in the 2004 season and was also the goalkeeper of the national team after the 2004 Copa America . In the 2005 season he had a hard time asserting himself in the club against the recovered and returned to Barcelona SC Cevallos. In early 2006 he moved on loan to Deportivo Quito , where he was the goalkeeper in the 2006 season. For the 2007 season he returned to Barcelona. In February 2007 he fell ill with dengue fever , but was soon able to continue his career. After he was only number 2 behind the Argentinian Gastón Sessa at Barcelona in the 2007 season , he moved to CD Olmedo in Riobamba for the 2008 season . Because of an injury, he had to pause there for almost the entire first half of the season. In the 2009 season he switched to Técnico Universitario Ambato .

National team

Villafuerte played for the U17, U20 and U23 national teams of Ecuador. In 1995 he took part in the U-17 World Cup. In the senior national team he has been used 15 times since his debut on September 5, 2004 in the World Cup qualifier in Uruguay. He was the most prominent goalkeeper during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup . Among other things, he was in goal in the victories against Argentina and Brazil. He has since been ousted as a regular goalkeeper by Cristian Mora . He was the second goalkeeper in Ecuador's squad for the 2006 World Cup, but was not used. He has not played any international matches since then.
