The 780.8  m above sea level. NHN high Simmersberg near Schnett (municipality of Masserberg ) in the district of Hildburghausen is the main summit of a ramified mountain ridge that runs at the interface between the Thuringian Forest and Thuringian Slate Mountains from the direction of Masserberg to the south-west and through the valleys of the lock (in the north-west) and its tributary Biber (in the south) is limited.

Other secondary peaks of the ridge are Hohe Warth (718 m) in the west, Kohlberg (718 m) in the southwest, Schnetter Berg (757 m) in the north and Höheberg (780 m) in the northeast. The volcanic origin within the otherwise non-volcanic ridge can be seen particularly well at the Simmersberg and its two 718 m high pre-peaks.

The 740 m high Holzberg , which connects 2 km northeast of the Schnetter Berg and north of the Höheberg, is separated from the Simmersberg peaks by a deep valley and must be viewed as a separate mountain.

view

Since the summit of the Simmersberg, on which there was originally an inn, now a youth hostel, is largely unwooded, the mountain offers a wide view in all directions without having to climb a tower. When visibility is good, the outlines of the Rhön are visible in the west and the less high Haßberge in the south.

Still well outside the Thuringian Forest, but a little closer to the west, Dolmar near Meiningen (740 m) is 30 km away and to the south-west the Gleichberge (642 and 679 m) 25 km away - all three of which are recognizable of volcanic origin. To the left or east of it are the Straufhain castle ruins (449 m) and the Coburg Fortress (464 m).

To the north (right) of the Dolmar you can see the outlines of the Pleß (645 m) in the extreme northeast of the Vorderen Rhön, 52 km away in the northwest . Immediately to the right of this, at a distance of 14 to 20 km - and thus easily recognizable even with a mediocre view - are the highest peaks of the Thuringian Forest :
