Great Eisenberg

The Great Eisenberg is 907.4  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Thuringian Forest (city of Suhl ), not far from the Rennsteig .

The mountain got its name from the iron ore deposits that were mined in the past and processed in the nearby Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig . The “Neuwerk” ironworks near Schmiedefeld was also supplied with ore from the Großer Eisenberg .

The Große Eisenberg is the fifth highest independent summit of the Thuringian Forest, although it looks rather unspectacular between Finsterberg (944 m), Adlersberg massif (849–891 m) and Schneekopf (978 m).

To the northeast, the Eisenberg merges into the Großer Finsterberg (944.1 m), to the southwest it is separated by its secondary peak Salzberg (866 m) from the Adlersberg massif, where Neuhauser Hügel (891 m, south-southwest) and Großer Erleshügel (839 m, west-southwest) connect. The Goldlauterberg , which connects to the northwest, is, however, already a Schneekopf forebear.
