The Wildekopf is a northwestern branch of the Great Beerberg , the highest mountain in the Thuringian Forest . At 943.2  m above sea level NHN Höhe, it is one of the highest peaks in the low mountain range, but has only about 800 m dominance and 21.4 m notch height , which is why it is not to be regarded as an independent mountain.

The 941.5 m high Sommerbachskopf , which is only 500 m north at a notch  height of less than 1.5 meters , is distinguished from the Wildekopf . However, the Wild head lies in the independent town Suhl , summer Bach head in Schmalkalden-Meiningen and the Great Beerberg in Ilm-Kreis , in which, except for the snow head streamers Spruce Head ( 944  m are, Suhl) all other peaks in the Thuringian Forest that exceed the two heads in height. Therefore, the Sommerbachskopf is the highest elevation in its district and the Wildekopf the second highest in its city.

Particularly from the south, the Wildekopf is a defining feature of the landscape for the mountain ridge. The eastern flank of the Wildekopf has one of the steepest and deepest slopes in the central massif of the Thuringian Forest.
