Schnett is a district of the municipality of Masserberg in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .
geography
Schnett is located on the south-western edge of the Thuringian Forest on the southern slope of the 780 meter high Simmersberg at an altitude of about 720 meters.
history
Schnett was first mentioned in a document in 1414. Old spellings of the place name were Sneid and Schneydt , the place name indicates that the forest cut at that place, i.e. H. had been cleared. A chapel on site was mentioned when it was first mentioned and was replaced by a new church in 1622. The determining branch of business in the area was always forestry and wood processing, the latter specializing in particular in the manufacture of chests and furniture painting, and later also the production of matches and boxes of ointments. In 1666 there were around 150 inhabitants, in 1853 there were 687, in 1936 there were around 1,300. After 1945 the place also became a tourist destination.
From 1952 Schnett belonged to the Hildburghausen district in the Suhl district . On April 1, 1997, the previously independent municipalities of Fehrenbach , Heubach , Masserberg and Schnett merged to form the unitary municipality of Masserberg.
Attractions
The Evangelical Church of St. Oswald goes back to a chapel mentioned in 1416 and replaced by a new building in 1622. The current church was built in 1810.
Thuringia's oldest youth hostel is on the Schnetter Simmersberg.
