Heinz Hergert (born December 6, 1936 in Schnett ) was a football player in the GDR upper league and played a game in the GDR national football team .

Athletic career

From 1951 Hergert went through all of the youth teams at BSG Motor Jena, the forerunner of SC Motor and FC Carl Zeiss Jena . In 1955 he played two international matches with the GDR junior national team , in which he was used as a midfielder. For the 1957 season, Hergert was delegated to SC Turbine Erfurt , the then football focus of the region (champions 1954 and 1955), in accordance with the regulations of GDR football. The move to Erfurt quickly turned out to be a misjudgment. As early as 1957, Motor Jena, meanwhile promoted from the second division to the league, was ahead of Turbine Erfurt in the championship, and in the 1959 season the Erfurt club even had to be relegated from the league. In addition, it took a long time for Hergert to gain a permanent position. In his first two seasons he was only used sporadically as a striker, only in the second half of the 1959 season he gained a foothold as a right defender.

After three years of top soccer, Hergert had to play in the soccer province in 1960. Since Erfurt played a dominant role in the first GDR league and rose again at the end of the season, Hergert managed to attract the attention of those responsible for selection with good performances. In July 1960, he was used internationally for the first time in the GDR youth team. In the same year he played in the B national team, to which he was then appointed a total of six times.

With its international status, Hergert could no longer be kept in Erfurt, because the SC Turbine was now finally in the shadow of the Thuringian rival SC Motor Jena. Consequently, Hergert returned to the roots of his football career in the summer of 1962. As a reward, he was used in the senior national team in the winter of the same year. As part of an Africa tour, he played on December 16, 1962 against Guinea (3-2 for the GDR) in his regular position as a right defender. Here he was tried as an alternative for Klaus Urbanczyk , but could not convince one hundred percent, so that he received no further appointments to the senior national team.

The 1962/63 season, however, was a great success for Hergert in other respects, as he finally won a title with his home team with the GDR championship. With his use in all 26 championship games, he was instrumental in this triumph. On May 8, 1965, he was close to winning his second title when he was in the final of the GDR soccer cup with SC Motor Jena . This did not succeed, however, because his team was defeated by SC Aufbau Magdeburg with 1: 2. His football career was drawing to a close at the age of 29. In the season 1966/67 he was only used in the reserve team, which only played in the third-rate district league. This did not meet Hergerts claims, and so he moved at the beginning of the 1967/68 season to the neighboring BSG Wismut Gera , which after a year-long stint in the league now played in the GDR league . Hergert was active in Gera for another four years, after which he finally ended his active career in the summer of 1971.

After his football career, Heinz Hergert, who was a trained toolmaker , first worked for IG Wismut as a representative for popular sports and later in the VEB Carl Zeiss Jena combine.
