Fehrenbach is a village in the municipality of Masserberg in Fehrenbacher Schweiz in Thuringia . The Werra rises not far from the village .

geography

Fehrenbach lies at an altitude of around 570 to 620 meters in the upper valley of the Biber below the Rennsteig, three kilometers away . The immediate area is known as Fehrenbach Switzerland because of the rocky mountainsides .

history

Fehrenbach's origin is a glassworks that was founded in 1564 by the glass master Hans Breitenbach and his wife Margarethe. The glassworks at the mouth of the Fehrenbach and the Biber was shut down in 1567. Thanks to the initiative of glass masters from Langenbach (today part of the Schleusegrund community ), it was able to be put back into operation from 1593. The village of Fehrenbach was created through clearing and the settlement of houses and mills around the glassworks. The two glass masters David Schmidt and Hans Holland, who founded the first village glassworks in Gehlberg , come from Fehrenbach . The place was part of the Eisfeld office . In 1666 there were 18 houses with 101 inhabitants. In addition to the glassworks and grinding and cutting mills , a pitch and a carbon black hut were also mentioned at that time. Around 1729 an iron hammer was in operation for a time. In 1852 there were almost 500 residents, most of whom lived in poor conditions. The place was later still considered one of the poorest mountain places. After it was taken over by Hermann Bulle in 1913, he closed the glassworks from 1914 to 1920, which worsened the plight of the population, as it did during the subsequent economic crisis from 1929 to 1932. During the GDR times, the place remained a location for glass production, packaging glasses and medicine bottles were made there. On April 1, 1997, Fehrenbach became part of the unitary community of Masserberg through the merger with some surrounding communities .

Attractions

Evangelical parish hall

On the outskirts of the village is the Fehrenbach parish hall , built in 1933 . The building, which is surrounded by woods and meadows, is used by the community for church services and offers overnight accommodation for vacationers and hikers.

tourism

Fehrenbach established itself as a resort with numerous overnight accommodations at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Werra spring , located near the village on the southern foothills of Eselsberg , is a popular destination. The so-called Werraquellfest takes place there once a year. In addition to extensive hiking opportunities, in winter there was not only tobogganing and cross-country skiing, but also a ski slope with a drag lift. In the 1970s the FDGB vacation home "Fritz Sattler" was built; Today it is run as a sports and wellness hotel.
