Heubach is a district of the community of Masserberg in the district of Hildburghausen in the Free State of Thuringia .

geography

Heubach extends at a height of 600 to 720 meters on the middle course of the Biber to the southeast slope of the Höheberg .

history

The establishment of the place, whose name was probably derived from Haidebach , goes back to the favorable location on the old trade route. This is mentioned in a document as early as 1190 as the "Via publica" and - coming from Nuremberg - crossed the Thuringian Forest at Heubach at an altitude of 720 m above sea level. NN towards Erfurt. In 1462, as is often the case on trade routes, the concession for a carter tavern is granted. In the same year a chapel was built dedicated to Saint Wolfgang , the protector of travelers and the sick, and it became a frequently visited place of pilgrimage.

Another document from 1462 reports that the chapel was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The village, which already existed in 1462 and belongs to the Eisfeld district, was built around the inn near the chapel. In the Thirty Years War , 18 houses in the village were destroyed. In 1647 the place received its own parish. In 1722 a major fire broke out, to which almost the entire town fell victim. The inhabitants found a modest livelihood in agriculture, wood processing, as weavers and in the iron stone mine between Heubach and Fehrenbach . There were also several mills, including up to five granulators . In 1852 there were 768 inhabitants. A steam sawmill was built around this time, and later a Veilsdorf porcelain factory. However, since the employment opportunities remained low, the place was temporarily considered an emergency area. In 1931 Heubach was the venue for the congress of forest poverty . Tourism, which began in the 1960s, contributed to the revitalization of the place. The FDGB holiday home " Hermann Duncker " became particularly well known .

During the GDR era, the VEB (K) Binnenreederei Berlin operated a children's holiday camp in the area , which is now used as a school camp and leisure camp.

Einsiedel was incorporated as early as April 1, 1974. On April 1, 1997, Heubach became part of the unitary community of Masserberg through the merger with some surrounding communities . Since 2001 Einsiedel is no longer part of Heubach, but an independent district.
