history

The Club Deportivo Espoli was founded on February 5, 1986 as a football club for a police school in Ecuador's capital Quito . The club spent the first few years of its existence in the lower Ecuadorian football leagues before being promoted to the first division, Serie A , for the first time in the 1993 season with a first place in Serie B, the second highest division in Ecuador . There Espoli was able to establish itself immediately and reached the runner-up only two years after the promotion, only behind record champions Barcelona SC Guayaquil . This success in the national championship allowed them to compete in the 1996 Copa Libertadores . In the tournament, which is the only one of its kind to date, in which Club Deportivo Espoli participated, the club reached the round of 16 completely surprisingly, but where they failed at the Brazilian top club Corinthians São Paulo with 1: 3 and 0: 2. Previously, Espoli was third in the preliminary round group 1 behind Barcelona SC Guayaquil and the Paraguayan representative Club Cerro Porteño , but also one point ahead of their league rivals Club Olimpia .

After the successes in the mid-1990s, CD Espoli went downhill with the turn of the millennium. After a few years of good placements in the midfield of Serie A, you had to go into the second division in 2004, ten years after the first season of the first division. After the immediate return to the Ecuadorian football club was successful, the 2006 season crashed again into Serie B. This time CD Espoli was able to return to Serie A after a year in the second division. In contrast to 2006, in the first division season 2008, relegation was even relatively safe with nine points ahead of Universidad Católica , the first relegated. Since then, CD Espoli has been in Serie A and has been in midfield in all of the following playing years. Since relegation in 2011, the club has played in the second division. In 2016, he was relegated to the third-class Segunda Categoría .
