Status: end of career

Patricio Javier Urrutia Espinoza (born October 15, 1977 in Zapotal , Los Ríos ) is a former Ecuadorian football player .

Club soccer

Urrutia began his first division career in Guayaquil at Barcelona SC Guayaquil . In 1997 he moved to the newly promoted Calvi FC from Machala . After the immediate relegation he stayed in Serie A, but his new club Técnico Universitario from Ambato also got down the following year and so he went to the second division. But during the season he moved back to the top division to Macará . There he was finally able to establish himself and the top clubs noticed him.

In the 2002 season he was loaned to his former club Barcelona SC and reached second place in the championship as a central force in midfield. In 2003, LDU Quito made the race for his services and his first championship title followed. Since then, the specialist in free kicks and long shots has been a regular and a fixture at the capital's club and in 2005 he was able to add a second championship title in the Apertura (in 2005 there were exceptionally two championship titles in Ecuador, one for each half of the season), and the third in 2007. In the 2008 season he won the Copa Libertadores final with LDU Quito . During the tournament he scored four goals, including one in the first leg. In the final penalty shootout, he converted one of the three decisive penalty kicks. In August 2009 he switched to the previous opponent in the final. At the beginning of 2010 he returned to LDU Quito, where he was able to win the championship again with his team in the same year. In the 2013 season he was hardly ever used and ended his career.

On December 20, 2006, he was suspended for four months from championship and international matches after he had actively participated in a brawl between players from LDU Quito and Barcelona SC Guayaquil following the last game of the season a few days earlier.

National team

In 2004, when he played internationally with LDU Quito in the Copa Libertadores and survived the group phase with the club, he also made his first appearance in the Ecuadorian national soccer team . Although it was a prestigious win for Ecuador against Brazil, it was still his only game for a while. At the end of 2005, his appointment to Ecuador's squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany came as a bit of a surprise. Nevertheless, he came on as a substitute in the tournament's first game. He also took part in the 2007 Copa America . On June 15, 2008, he scored the opening goal to 1-0 for Ecuador in the World Cup qualifying away game in Argentina, which almost led to an historic away win for his country, as Argentina only equalized in the 93rd minute through Rodrigo Palacio . On April 1, 2009, he was last deployed for his country.
