Else Borst-Eilers (born March 22, 1932 in Amsterdam , † February 10, 2014 in Bilthoven ) was a Dutch doctor and politician .

Life

She studied medicine in Amsterdam from 1950 to 1958 . From 1958 to 1965 she specialized in the fields of paediatrics and immunohematology and worked as an assistant doctor. From 1965 to 1969 she was a research assistant at the University of Utrecht . She then worked at the blood bank of the Academic Teaching Hospital in Utrecht, where she was medical director from 1975 to 1986. From 1986 to 1994 she was Vice-Chair of the Dutch Health Council.

Borst-Eilers had been a member of Democrats 66 (D66) since 1968 . When her party formed a coalition government with the PvdA and the VVD in 1994 , she was appointed Minister of Health. She led the D66 as the top candidate in the 1998 parliamentary election, after the poor performance of the Democrats (loss of ten seats), she renounced the parliamentary group chairmanship and another leading role in the party, but made herself available for a second term as minister and had also held the office of Deputy Prime Minister until July 2002.

During her eight-year term in office, fundamental medical and ethical issues were discussed in the Netherlands, including euthanasia and embryo research . Under their aegis, a law was passed that under certain conditions no longer made euthanasia a criminal offense. This brought her massive hostility. Although she was credited with a high level of expertise, her administration was not without controversy and she had to face two votes of no confidence . Her active political career ended after the parliamentary elections in 2002, when the coalition of social democrats, left and right liberals was discontinued.

Els Borst-Eilers was made an honorary member of the D66 in 2003. In December 2012 she was awarded the honorary title Minister van Staat . She died at the age of 81 in February 2014 under initially unexplained circumstances. According to the results of a forensic medical examination, Borst-Eilers was the victim of a violent crime. In the municipal council elections on March 20, 2014, she received 391 personal votes posthumously in De Bilt , where she was last on the list of candidates for D66 .

In January 2015, a 38-year-old from Rotterdam was arrested as a suspect who, according to the investigation report, had killed Els Borst with 41 knife wounds. At the beginning of February 2016, a man who had already become known through the murder of his sister confessed to having murdered Borst "on divine order" because of her commitment to euthanasia.
