International Sonneberg Jazz Days is the name of a festival of jazz and gospel music that has been held annually in November in Sonneberg , Thuringia , since 1986 . The organizer is the Sonneberger Jazzfreunde e. V.

history

The festival was launched on the occasion of the 15th stage anniversary of the Sonneberg jazz band Jazz Optimists on November 29, 1986 . On the 15th birthday of the jazz optimists , the general director of the former VEB Kombinat Spielwaren Sonneberg, as the sponsoring company, made it possible to organize a jazz night with well-known guests in Sonneberg. Due to the success of this event, it was decided to repeat the Sonneberg Jazz Night with several formations every November . In 1987, the Jazz Day Orchestra from Poland was the first international group to perform at the festival.

With Mighty Flea Connors and his Band and Queen Yahna it was possible for the first time to bring performers from the USA to Sonneberg in 1991 . In the following years there were still very good jazz musicians, but now also very popular ones like Bill Ramsey , the Dutch Swing College Band or Rod Mason , Chris Barber , Terry Lightfoot and Kenny Ball with their bands from Great Britain . Over time, the festival opened up to other styles such as gospel .

In order to secure the future of the jazz optimists and the Sonneberg Festival for the region, the Sonneberger Jazzfreunde eV association was founded in 1992 under the direction of Peter Wicklein , with the participation of jazz fans from neighboring Franconia .

In the first 30 years of its existence, 335 bands with 2582 actors performed at 355 concerts as part of the festival.
