Rod Mason

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rod Mason (born September 28, 1940 in Plymouth ; † January 8, 2017 in Neuss ) was a British musician ( trumpet , cornet , vocals ) of oldtime jazz .

Live and act

Mason, whose father ran a jazz band, first learned the trombone before playing the trumpet and cornet in his father's band. From 1959 he was a member of the Cy Laurie band . With Monty Sunshine he founded the Monty Sunshine Band in 1962 . A facial paralysis forced him to use other mouthpieces, which allowed him to expand the range of his playing.

In 1965 he founded his first band. From 1970 he played in the Paramount jazz band of Acker Bilk , before he founded a band with Ian Wheeler in 1973 ; with musicians such as Brian Lemon , Dick Wellstood and Bob Wilber , he made numerous recordings for the Riff label. From 1980 Mason played in the Dutch Swing College Band . In 1985 he founded his own band with his Hot Five , with whom he recorded a number of albums for Timeless Records and toured Europe regularly.

Mason was , according to Digby Fairweather , "a world-class trumpeter [...] with phenomenal versatility, unlimited endurance, and the terrifying ability to sound like Louis Armstrong ." He lived in Kaarst with his wife Ingrid .
