Cy Laurie

Cyril "Cy" Laurie (* 20th April 1926 in London , † 18th April 2002 in Essex ) was a British jazz - clarinetist and bandleader.

Live and act

Cy Laurie was self-taught on the clarinet; In 1947 he founded his first band, which was joined by George Melly in 1948 . In 1949/50 he played with Mike Daniels and in 1950 directed the Cy Laurie Four with Fred Hunt and Les Jowett . In 1951 he ran his own club in London and led a seven-member ensemble; in him played u. a. Chris Barber , Alan Elsdon , Al Fairweather , John Picard and Colin Smith . Cy Laurie's club was in Ham Yard and became the legendary mod club The Scene in the 1960s .

From 1960 to 1968 he withdrew from the music business due to illness; At the end of the decade he briefly led another ensemble and then played as a guest with Max Collie , the Savoy Jazzmen , Max Duncan and Chris Watford until he joined the Black Bottom Stompers . At the end of the 1970s he toured with various formations as a soloist and occasionally worked with his own bands. In the 1980s he worked with Eggy Ley and Max Collie's Mardi Gras ; he continued his musician career until the 1990s, where he performed with his own band and with Beryl Bryden .
