Ian Wheeler

Ian Wheeler (born January 13, 1931 in Greenwich ; † June 27, 2011 ) was a British saxophonist (alto and soprano saxophone) and clarinetist of traditional jazz .

Live and act

Wheeler initially played guitar and ukulele and was influenced by Josh White . He performed with the bands of Charlie Galbraith and Mike Jefferson, then with Charlie Connor, through whom he came to the clarinet . From 1952 he played with the River City Jazz Band , before becoming known as the successor to Acker Bilk in Ken Colyer's Jazzmen , of which he was a member from 1955 to 1960. He then played from 1961 to 1968 and again from 1976 to 1998 with Chris Barbers Jazz & Blues Band. In the 1970s he co-led the Rod Mason- Ian Wheeler band and played in the revival formation Best Of British in the late 1990s . In 1977/78 he recorded the album Reed all About It with guest musicians such as Dick Wellstood and Peter Ind ; In 1993 the album At Farnham Meetings was created with Rod Mason. Around 2000 he also performed with Lutz Eikelmann's band .

Ian Wheeler died on June 27, 2011 at the age of 80.
