Álex Darío Aguinaga Garzón (born June 7, 1969 in Ibarra ) is an Ecuadorian football player . The midfielder last played at LDU Quito in the first Ecuadorian division and ended his career in December 2005. He then moved back to Mexico, where he worked for Necaxa . Since 2014 he has been the coach of the traditional Colombian club Águilas Doradas .

Club soccer

Aguinaga played for Deportivo Quito from 1984 to 1989 . In 1989 he was signed by Necaxa in Mexico, for whom he was active until he switched to CD Cruz Azul for six months in the summer of 2003 . In January 2004 he returned to Ecuador and played for LDU Quito in the 2004 and 2005 seasons . After the Clausura tournament in 2005, he ended his career.

With Necaxa, Aguinaga became Mexican champions in 1994/95, 1995/96 and in the winter season 1998 and won the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1999 . He is considered the most important player in the history of Necaxa. The number 7, usually worn by Aguinaga, is currently no longer given there.

With Liga de Quito in 2005 he won the championship in the first half of the season ( Apertura ).

National team

Aguinaga made his debut on March 5, 1987 at the age of 17 in the Ecuadorian national team in a game against Cuba in Havana , which Ecuador lost 2-1 despite a goal by Aguinaga. Later, he was for many years captain and midfielder of the national team for which he held until his retirement after the 2004 Copa América in Peru scored in 109 games 23 goals. He was the first Ecuadorian to play his 100th international match (against Costa Rica on November 20, 2002), and in the total number of appearances was only surpassed by record international player Iván Hurtado . Behind Agustín Delgado and Eduardo Hurtado , he is also the third most successful goalscorer in the Tricolor .

Aguinaga took part with the national team in eight tournaments for the Copa America , the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2002 and the soccer world championship 2002 in Japan and South Korea .
