Alexei Gennadjewitsch Smertin ( Russian Алексей Геннадьевич Смертин ; born May 1, 1975 in Barnaul ) is a former Russian football player and active politician.
Career
The defensive midfielder began his career at his home club Dynamo Barnaul , where he was brought to the first team in 1992. In 1994 he moved to Zaria Leninsk-Kuznetsky. In 1997 it went on to Uralan Elista . From 1999 to 2000 Smertin played for his first top club, Lokomotiv Moscow . His first club as a legionnaire was in France at Girondins Bordeaux . In 2003 the Russian went to the British Isles for Portsmouth FC for the first time , before moving to Chelsea FC a year later . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season Smertin played at Charlton Athletic . For the 2006/07 season he moved back to his homeland to Dynamo Moscow , before the 2007/08 season he moved back to the Premier League for Fulham .
After his contract was terminated in 2008, Smertin started a new career in Russian politics. Since March 2009 he has held a seat in the Parliament of the Altai Region .
