Niederkail is a village in the Eifel in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate with about 680 inhabitants. Since 1975 it belongs as a district to the local community Landscheid .
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1211. The nobleman “Godefried von der Keyle” is said to have lived here as early as 1070 and owned two water mills .
Personalities
- Peter Zirbes , (born January 10, 1825 in Niederkail; † November 14, 1901), was a traveling "singer" (poet) from Niederkail. There is a street in the village that was named after him. His house still exists and is a sightseeing destination for tourists.
- Karl Hofstätter, (born December 9, 1926 in Domstadtl ; † December 4, 2017 in Niederkail), local mayor of Niederkail from 1964 to 1975, local mayor of the Landscheid community from 1976 to 1989, holder of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
