This article covers the Russian national football team at the 2018 World Cup . Russia took part in the finals for the fourth time and as a host for the first time.
qualification
The Russian team are automatically qualified as hosts for the finals after Russia prevailed on December 2, 2010 against the joint applications from Spain and Portugal, the Netherlands and Belgium and the application from England.
preparation
Since the Russian team did not have to play any qualifying games , all friendlies with a view to the 2018 World Cup were played at the latest after the preliminary round at the 2016 European Championship , after which Stanislav Cherchessov took over as coach. The Russians competed against teams from all the confederations ultimately represented at the World Cup and also hosted the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup , where New Zealand also competed as a representative of the Oceanic Confederation that was not represented at the World Cup. Between the European Championship finals and the Confederations Cup, the Russians played nine games, three of which were won, ended in a draw and lost. In the Confederations Cup, the Russians could only win the opening game against New Zealand , but then lost to European champions Portugal and Mexico , so that they missed the knockout round.

Group draw
Venues and quarters (blue / italic) of the Russian team |
For the qualifying draw on December 1, Russia pot was assigned one and as a group head of the group A set. The Russians could therefore not be drawn against world champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, runner-up world champions Argentina or European champions Portugal. The draw was drawn for the Russian record African champions Egypt , Saudi Arabia and ex-world champions Uruguay . Russia did not meet any of the three teams in the previous three appearances in 1994, 2002 and 2014. Russia has never played against the Egyptians. The previous team, the Soviet Union, played three times against Egypt in 1955 and won all games. In addition, there were two victories for the Soviet Olympic team in 1988. The Russians only played a friendly against Uruguay, which ended 1-1. The USSR played against Uruguay in the preliminary round of the 1962 World Cup and won 2-1. At the 1970 World Cup, the USSR was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Uruguay with a score of 1-0. There were also four wins in friendly matches. There was only one friendly game against Saudi Arabia, which the Russians lost 4-2.
The group game in Samara is the Russians' first game in this city.
