Igor Alexandrowitsch Smolnikow ( Russian Игорь Александрович Смольников ; English Igor Smolnikov ; born August 8, 1988 in Kamensk-Uralsky , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is a Russian football player . The full-back and 29-time senior international is under contract with Zenit St. Petersburg .

Career

Smolnikow switched from Lokomotiv Moscow to Torpedo Moscow in early 2006 . There he made his debut on November 4, 2006 in the 0-2 defeat against FK Moscow in the Premjer Liga . He returned to Lokomotiv in January 2008 and was awarded to Ural Yekaterinburg , FK Chita , Schemchuschina Sochi and FK Rostov for the next four years to gain match practice. For the 2012/13 season Smolnikow moved to FK Krasnodar and came there to 30 league appearances. After the end of the season he went to Zenit St. Petersburg , where he was able to establish himself as a regular player. In his first season he played with Zenit after successfully qualifying in the Champions League , in which he reached the round of 16 with the team . In the 2014/15 season Smolnikov reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League with the team and won the Russian championship. At the beginning of May 2016 he secured the Russian Cup victory with Zenit after beating CSKA Moscow 4-1 in the final .

National team

Smolnikow played from the U18 on for youth national teams of the Russian Football Association . With the U19 selection , he took part in the U19 European Championship in Austria in July 2007 and was used in all three group games of his team, which was eliminated as the bottom of the group. For the U21 national team , Smolnikow completed an EM qualifier against Romania on September 7, 2010 , which ended 0-0.

On November 19, 2013 Smolnikow made his debut in the 2-1 victory in the friendly against South Korea in the senior team . For the 2016 European Championship in France , he was appointed to the Russian squad by national coach Leonid Sluzki . In the tournament he was used in all three games of his team over the full playing time, but was eliminated with her as the bottom of the group . For the Confederations Cup 2017 and the 2018 World Cup on home soil Smolnikow was also for the Russian squad nominated.
