Leonid Viktorovich Slutski
Leonid Wiktorowitsch Sluzki ( Russian Леонид Викторович Слуцкий ; born May 4, 1971 in Volgograd , RSFSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian football goalkeeper and current coach . On August 7, 2015, Slutsky was appointed coach of the Russian national football team. After leaving the European Championship in France, he announced his departure.
Career
Career as a player
Leonid Sluzki's active career ended when he was just 19 years old due to a knee injury. He sustained the injury while rescuing the neighbor's cat from falling off a tree.
Coaching career
His coaching career began in 2000 with the youth team of Olimpia Volgograd . After a two-year break, he took over the reserve team from Uralan Elista . In 2003 he took over the professional team there. After Uralan Elista was transferred to the 2nd division, he took over a reserve team again, this time from FK Moscow . In 2005 he took over the professional team here too. After two years at FK Moscow, Slutsky was fired. In 2008 he hired Samara from Krylja Sowetow . In October 2009 he moved to CSKA Moscow , with whom he reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in the club's history .
Since mid-2015 - after Fabio Capello's dismissal - he coached the Russian national soccer team. Under his leadership, the team won all four remaining games of the Euro 2016 qualification and qualified directly for the finals as runners-up in the group. At the finals, the Russians were eliminated from the group and Slutsky resigned from his position.
In June 2017 Sluzki was signed by the English second division club Hull City . In early December 2017, he left the club by "mutual agreement" after none of the previous seven games had been won.
On March 12, 2018 it was announced that he would replace Henk Fraser as coach of the Eredivisie team Vitesse Arnhem at the beginning of the 2018/19 season . During his tenure, Vitesse moved into the third qualifying round of the Europa League against the seeded FC Basel. The two legs were played at home on August 9th and away on August 16, 2018. Vitesse lost 2-0 overall, which resulted in their elimination from the Europa League. In the Dutch Premier League Vitesse finished fifth this season. After losing five games in a row, he quit his job as Vitesse Arnhem's coach in November 2019.
Private life
Slutki's father, a sports champion in amateur boxing, died when Leonid was six years old. His mother was an educator.
His parents chose the first name Leonid in honor of the then Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev .
Today Slutsky is married and has a son named Dmitri.
