Oleg Ivanovich Romanzew ( Russian Олег Иванович Романцев , scientific transliteration Oleg Ivanovič Romancev ; born January 4, 1954 in Gavrilowskoje , Ryazan Oblast ) is a Russian football coach and former football player . In the 1990s he was the country's most successful coach.
Romanzew played in the 1970s to the mid-1980s at Spartak Moscow as a left defender and was temporarily captain. In 1979 he became Soviet champion at Spartak . With the Soviet national team he won the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games . Two years later he was in the squad for the 1982 World Cup , but was not used. In the mid-1980s, he had to end his active career because of a back injury.
After his career as a player, he switched to the coaching business. After gaining initial experience at a few smaller clubs, he took over the coaching position at Spartak Moscow in 1989. Romanzew led Spartak to eight Soviet and Russian championship titles and four cup wins. Since 1993 he was also president of the association. In June 2003 he was dismissed after persistent unsuccessfulness after losing the presidency.
In 1994 Romanzew was the first coach of the Russian national team . After the disappointing performance at the European Championships in 1996 , he was dismissed, but then again appointed national coach in 1998. Although Russia missed the qualification for the EM 2000, he remained in office and made the qualification for the World Cup 2002 . There, however, Russia was eliminated again in the preliminary round and Romanzew resigned from his post.
After the dismissal at Spartak, his next coaching stations were FK Saturn Ramenskoje (September 2003 to December 2004) and FK Dynamo Moscow (January to May 2005). In 2006 he worked as an assistant coach at FC Nika Moscow, a club from the 2nd division . Since April 2009 Romanzew has been working as a full-time advisor at Spartak Moscow again.
