Sardar Azmoun ( Persian سردار آزمون Sardār Āzmūn , born January 1, 1995 in Gonbad-e Kavus , Golestan ) is an Iranian football player . Since January 2019 he has been playing for Zenit St. Petersburg in the Russian first division .

Career

Origin and early career

Sardar Azmoun was born in Gonbad-e Kavus , the second largest city in the northern Iranian province of Golestan . He belongs to the ethnic minorities of Turkmens , which in Golestan after the Persians are the largest ethnic group. He began his football career at the Sepahan FC club in Isfahan . Azmoun's talent was noticed early on, so that he was used for various junior national teams in Iran.

Rubin Kazan

In 2012, a football official working for the Russian club Rubin Kazan became aware of the striker and referred him to Gurban Berdiýew , the club's Turkmen coach. He signed him, after which he moved to the Russian metropolis in January 2013. On October 6, 2013 Azmoun made his debut in Kazan's 5-1 victory against Anzhi Makhachkala in the Premjer League , where he succeeded in stoppage time to make it 4-1.

On July 14, 2017, the Azmoun club signed up again. In the Premjer-Liga 2017/18 he came to 26 games in which he could score five goals.

FK Rostov

In February 2015 he was awarded to the league competitor FK Rostov and firmly committed to the 2016/17 season. The transfer fee was 2.3 million euros. Here he moved into the group stage of the Champions League with his club and reached the second round in the Europa League after leaving . In these 14 games, Azmoun scored five goals, including the one to equalize in the 3-2 home win over Bayern Munich .

Rubin Kazan

On July 14, 2017, Azmoun returned to Rubin Kazan on a free transfer.

Zenit St. Petersburg

On February 1, 2019, he moved to league rivals Zenit St. Petersburg , where he signed a three-year contract.

National team

Azmoun was a youth international. In 2014 he was nominated for the first time for the men . He made his debut in a friendly against Montenegro in May 2014 . However , he was not nominated for the 2014 World Cup . At the 2018 World Cup , however, he was part of the Iranian squad and played as a center forward in all three group matches against Morocco , Spain and Portugal . However, Iran was eliminated in the group third in the preliminary round. Due to the insults he received, he announced his resignation from the national team shortly after leaving at the age of 23, but returned in October of the same year. He scored four goals at the 2019 Asian Cup, but was eliminated with the national team in the semi-finals against Japan.
